Barbizon Village
The painters' village
🏛️ A bit of history:
Nestled on the edge of the Fontainebleau Forest, Barbizon is a charming village that has left its mark on the history of painting and continues to attract art and nature lovers today.
In the 19th century, this peaceful hamlet in Seine-et-Marne became the birthplace of the Barbizon School, a precursor to Impressionism. Painters such as Jean-François Millet, Théodore Rousseau, and Camille Corot settled there to paint outdoors, inspired by the beauty of the surrounding landscapes.
Today, Barbizon has preserved its artistic soul. Visitors can discover studios, galleries, Millet's house and studio, and the Auberge Ganne, a former gathering place for artists of yesteryear that has now been converted into a museum.
With its narrow streets lined with stone houses, flower-filled gardens, and peaceful atmosphere, Barbizon offers a timeless cultural and bucolic getaway just a few miles from Paris.
